Last season, it was UTEP and Toledo battling for the GMAC Bowl. This time around, it will feature Conference USA #2 against either the MAC champion or runner-up in a contest that has witnessed future NFL stars such as LaDainian Tomlinson, Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich.

The GMAC Bowl is a post-season college football game sanctioned by the NCAA that has been played annually in Mobile, Alabama since 1999.

The 7th annual GMAC Bowl was played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, which has a seating capacity of 40,646. The University of Texas El Paso accepted the invitation to face Mid-American Conference representative Toledo and got wiped out 45-13 in the contest.

At 8-3, the Miners had generated impressive offensive stats last season, ranking sixth nationally in passing offense with an average of 310.5 yards per game. Toledo, also at 8-3, was lead by senior quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, who had thrown for 2,171 yards and 24 touchdowns that season before being drafted by Tampa Bay.

From 1999 to 2000, this post-season NCAA football bowl game was known as the "Mobile Alabama Bowl." With the corporate sponsorship of GMAC Financial Services, a division of General Motors, it became known as the GMAC Bowl in 2001.

The inaugural game of the Mobile Alabama Bowl in 1999 saw the TCU Horned Frogs post an impressive victory over East Carolina by a score of 28-14. LaDainian Tomlinson led TCU in their second consecutive bowl upset, running for 124 yards and two touchdowns. LT certainly hasn’t slowed down since he hits the pro ranks.

TCU took to the field again in 2000, this time against the 8-4 Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. The Eagle's Jeff Kelly threw a 29-yard touchdown pass with only eight seconds remaining to bring the to Eagles an 28-21 victory, completing an amazing rally that reversed TCU's 21-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.

2001, the first year the game was played as the GMAC Bowl, was to become the highest-scoring game in college football bowl history, with the Marshall Thundering Herd nudging out the East Carolina Pirates by an incredible 64-61. Refusing to be daunted by a 30-point halftime deficit, the Herd's Byron Leftwich capped his night and sealed his team's victory with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Josh Davis.

The 2002 GMAC Bowl saw Leftwich and his Herd on top again, this time in a 28-15 victory over the Louisville Cardinals. Marshall scored first on a 9-yard pass from Leftwich and did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.

The Cardinals made another visit to the GMAC Bowl in 2003, this time against the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks, who entered the game with an impressive 13-1 record. The RedHawks' Ben Roethlisberger passed for 376 yards and made four first-half touchdowns to lead Miami to a decisive 49-28 victory over Louisville.

Two teams new to the GMAC Bowl took to the field in 2004, with the Mid-American Conference's Bowling Green (8-4) taking on the Memphis Tigers (9-3). Bowling Green's Omar Jacobs passed for 365 yards and five touchdowns as he brought his Falcons to a 52-35 victory over the Tigers.

In the 2005 edition, Toledo represented the MAC well as QB Bruce Gradkowski fired five TD passes in a 45-13 rout of the UTEP Miners. Gradkowski moved on have a solid rookie season in Tampa Bay, but his performance in 2005 ensured the MAC ran its GMAC Bowl record to a perfect 5-0.
