Zia Park Racetrack is located in Hobbs, New Mexico - a city of about 29,000 nestled halfway between the Texas towns of El Paso and Lubbock. A field of horses charged out of the gates at Zia Park for the first time in 2005, with the hopes that horse racing would breathe new life into the oil and gas town. The total cost of this massive facility was $45 million and well worth it as Hobbs was trying to loosen its dependency on the oil business.
The president of Zia Park, Bruce Rimbo, proposed the building of this track in 1999. On opening day, an estimated 3,000 people showed up - a large number considering the population of Hobbs is only 29,000. Zia Park offers purses ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 per race.
Along with the Black Gold Casino, Zia Park offers amenities such as a first-class restaurant, live music every Friday and Saturday night, a pub that features various NFL games and a casino that has over 650 slot machines.
