In 1879, after securing a 90-acre portion of the Sonoma County Fairgrounds, construction of a 1-mile racetrack complete with stalls, grandstand and other improvements began. Today, Santa Rosa Racetrack comprises a 1-mile oval, two chutes and 1,022 stalls.
Santa Rosa Racetrack is one of the many racetracks included in the California Authority of Racing Fairs (CARF). Legendary horses, trainers and jockeys have competed on the CARF circuit.
In the early days, settlers and explorers in California would often gather to see who had the fastest horse. The legacy of these settlers and explorers continues today at tracks like Santa Rosa.
Amidst all the fun, horse racing is serious business. Revenue at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds is $36,751,333, for a daily average of $3,062,611.
