The epitome of the wild west, Ruidoso Downs Racetrack ran its first race in 1947. Located in the Ruidoso Downs, a town with a population of 1,824 in New Mexico, the track has been a success from the beginning.
Shortly after the State of New Mexico legalized casinos at racetracks, Ruidoso's Billy the Kid Casino opened its doors in May of 1999, filled with over 300 slot machines and primed to do brisk business.
By 2004, it had paid out over $115 million in winnings.
The success of the casino has prompted numerous renovations, which, when completed in the spring of 2006, will include a new restaurant and bar, complete with dance floor and stage for nightly live entertainment. Simulcast wagering will be relocated to the new expanded bar area adjacent to the casino floor.
Dining accommodations at Ruidoso include The Billy the Kid Casino Buffet, The Fort Stanton Bar and Grill (located adjacent to the casino), and The Turf Club, which is opened only during live racing.
Live horse races at Ruidoso Downs are run annually from Memorial Day to Labor Day, culminating with the richest race in the world for quarterhorses - the $2-million All American Futurity. The event debuted in 1959 with the filly Galobar winning the race.
