About Hawthorne Thoroughbred Racetrack

Hawthorne Park is located in the beautiful town of Cicero, Illinois. Cicero, which has a population of more than 85,000 residents, is located in the northeastern part of the state. Hawthorne Park was opened on May 20, 1891, and featured a famous 1–mile race called the Chicago Derby. The owner, Edward Corrigan, estimated the crowd to be upward of 6,000 people for this five-race card.

During the early 1900s, Corrigan ran into many obstacles such as seeing the track's grandstand burn in 1902. In 1905, horse racing was banned in Chicago and wouldn't be legal again until 1922. At that time, Corrigan sold the track to Thomas Carey.

Soon after, many new additions were added, such as a new tote system called the "American Totalizator". In 1961, a glass-enclosed, air-conditioned Gold Cup Room that overlooked the finish line opened.

With famous races such as the Chicago Derby and the 1–mile Illinois Derby, many believe Hawthorne Park to be what amazing horse racing is supposed to emphasis. A comfortable and high-tech environment for bettors ensconced in a racetrack that thrives to be the best in North America.
