About Fair Grounds Racetrack

Founded in 1852, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Fairgrounds is the 3rd oldest racetrack in North America. In 1863 due to the occupation of Union Troops within New Orleans during the civil war, Fairgrounds went through a number of changes. Despite the lack of quality horses, having been confiscated by the Union, the track still prospered. Boxing, baseball games, along with bull and bear fights, accompanied with Thoroughbred, harness, Quarter Horse, and Calvary races, all drew crowds to the track during the rough times. In 1873 pari-mutuel wagering was introduced as an option to horseplayers, and by 1900, Fairgrounds was the only track in the country that had accepted and continued the system.

In 1907 when horse betting was outlawed in Missouri, the grandstand of Union Park Racetrack in St. Louis was dismantled and shipped to Fairgrounds, to be re-assembled. The 5,000-seat Grandstand with a central area known as the Palm Garden constitutes the largest auditorium in New Orleans. In 1940, owners of the Fairgrounds, sold the track to real estate developers who planned to convert it to a subdivision, and on January 2nd, 1941, Fairgrounds went on the auction block. At the last moment it was saved from destruction by Sylvester W. Labrot Jr, who purchased the property and formed the Fairgrounds Corporation.

On the night of December 17th, 1993, Fairgrounds had it's 3rd fire, which completely destroyed the grandstand. In 1994 the new $27.6 million grandstand/clubhouse project began, but was immediately halted when scandals involving the gaming industry jeopardized the financing. By 1997, Fairgrounds opened the new grandstand/clubhouse facility to the public on Thanksgiving Day. In 2005, the track once again was closed, this time due to damage from Hurricane Katrina. The track re-opened in November 2006.
