Odds Explained
In virtually all sports events, one competitor is the favorite, or the team most likely to win, and the other is the underdog. In order to make wagering more even, the linesmaker draws up an odds line, or the odds, such that you can bet on the probability of a competitor's win. The greater the likelihood of the event occurring, the lesser the odds. Conversely, the lesser the likelihood of the event occurring, the greater the odds. As expected, the odds determine your potential payout. The odds are quoted in the Bodog Sportsbook in one of three formats: American (moneyline), fractional, or decimal. American (Moneyline) OddsMoneyline odds are favored by American bookmakers and, therefore, are often referred to as American odds. With this format, the odds are quoted using either a positive or a negative number. A negative number indicates the favorite, and the odds show how much money you'll have to risk to win $100. A positive number indicates the underdog, and the odds show how much money you'll win on a $100 wager. When the odds are listed as EVEN, you'll win exactly what you wager. A standard line, where the odds are -110 for both teams, indicates that neither team is favored to win. In the Bodog Sportsbook, you'll see moneyline odds attached to point spreads, moneylines (obviously!), totals, futures, and some sports and entertainment props. Fractional OddsFractional odds are represented as a fractional number and show what your profit will be on a one-unit wager. For example, odds of 4/1 ("four-to-one" or "four-to-one against") means that you stand to win $4 for every $1 you wager. On the other hand, odds of 1/4 ("four-to-one on") means that you must wager $4 to win $1. When the odds are 1/1, you'll win exactly what you wager. The fractional form of a standard line is 10/11. Fractional odds are widely used in the UK and Australia. In the Bodog Sportsbook, you'll see them with futures and most entertainment props. Decimal OddsDecimal odds differ from fractional odds in that they represent your total payout and not just your profit - your original wager and your winnings are combined. To convert fractional odds to decimal, convert the fractional number to a decimal and then add 1. For example, the equivalent of 4/1 in decimal odds is 5.0, and 1/4 is the same as 1.25. |
